This film is a visual WOW! from start to finish! But, when you take away the cutting edge of glorious sets, breathtaking CGI effects, and superb cinematography you're left with the talents: the actors you put into that award-level costumery and a director who couldn't detect so many holes in the script that it resembles a kitchen colander. Director Paul W.S. Anderson and screenwriters Alex Litvak and Andrew Davies pull out every cliche' known to movie swordfighting as a basis for their narrative about good versus treachery against the crown. Wearing that crown is weak-legged, King Louis XIII of France (Freddie Fox) who is one brain cell shy of an imbecile. Totally devoted to his safety and good health are the original three musketeers, Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Aramis (Luke Evans) and the monster-sized Porthos (Ray Stevenson) -- to which enters newcomer D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman), as skilled with the sword as any of them.

He's so good, in fact, that he attracts the attention of the Queen's beautiful blond lady-in-waiting (Juno Temple) with his mastery of swordsmanship agaisnt the forces of Rochefort (Mads Mikkelsen), the leader of Cardinal Richelieu's (Christoph Waltz) guards who are the local bad cops. The lad's arrogance is only fed by his fighting groups of them off under the attentive gaze of the lady. But this is small stuff against the other evils being perpetrated.

The totally corrupt Richelieu is the arch villain who is ever at the dumb king's side as his advisor and betrayer-in-chief and demands his hand be kissed by all whose stations are beneath his. The beautiful Milady de Winter (Milla Jovovich) adds feminine guile as well as pulchritude as a double agent between the crown and his prime enemy, English Duke of Buckingham (sneering Orlando Bloom), who is also guilty of having been the Queen's lover, a terrible problem that preoccupies the king every minute of the day.

The weapons of choice are the rather ridiculously contrived (but grand) air-ships out of Terry Gilliam's wildest dreamscapes, giving our intrepid foursome something to work with as the crown jewels become the object everyone get very worked up over, producing wild gymnastics and phony fight choreography galore (always entertaining assuming we can ignore the 21st century laser beam security system protecting them -- but that's what Jovovich is here for).

I kid you not -- this is simply ASTONISHING eye candy from every technical department. What a production! If you have a special interest in the visual part of filmmaking you just have to see it in all the sheer glory of its excess. The film was made in Bavaria, Germany where they found that grand palace. Or, was that just CGI?

General Movie Night Information

RSVP Requested: Anyone wishing to attend a Movie Night must email or phone me to reserve a seat for the specified night they are coming.   There is limited seating for each viewing, so any unannounced arrivals may find themselves in a Standing-Room-Only situation.  Email me at troy@troyfrey.com or call me at 717-665-1249.

Arrival Time: Please Arrive at 7:00 pm so we have time to get all the snacks and drinks organized on the concession table,  and everyone has a chance to meet and greet, get their snacks and drinks ready for the show, and get settled into their seats.  The movie will start at 7:30, so please be present and ready to be seated well before that time.  If the overhead garage door is closed when you arrive, please ring the doorbell at the left side of the door frame repeatedly, until we open the garage door for you!

Admission:  Please bring a Snack Item or jug of beverage for everyone to share.  I will provide beer on tap, a jug of ice tea for those who don't drink beer, fresh hot popcorn from a commercial popper, and the movie.  Some snack suggestions for everyone else to bring: Regular chips & dip, pretzels, Doritos, nuts, cheese curls, crackers, cheese cubes, veggies & dip, donuts, etc. or an additional jug of soda, lemonade, or other drink. All snacks and drinks will be set out on the Concession Table to share around, and any leftover items will be stored for use at the next event.  Be creative with your selections, but please bring something that most everyone will enjoy eating!

Feature Movie: Starts at 7:30 Sharp!  Movie shown is as listed in the Movie Schedule Above.

Be aware the movie is usually an action/adventure type of film and the sound system is very powerful.

Be prepared for very loud explosions, gunfire, crashes, and strong vibrating bass.

Intermission: The movies shown in the Frey Theater are usually paused at a mid-point for a 15 minute intermission in the middle of each movie, for a snack and bathroom break.  Figure this extra time into the total length of the movie.

Second Feature: If anyone wishes to stay later, or cannot make the 7:30 movie, a Second Feature can easily be shown either night.  This can be the same or a different Movie, Concert Video, Comedy video, TV series DVD, etc. and will be at the choosing of those staying late.  The second feature would generally start around 9:30 - 10:00 pm, depending on length of first movie - everyone is welcome to stay late!

Late Arrivals: The big garage door at the front of the house will be locked during the movie.  There is an illuminated  Doorbell on the left side of the garage door opening, next to the entry keypad; please press it multiple times in succession.   The doorbell rings in the theater seating area. We will NOT hear you knocking, pounding, or screaming outside once the movie starts - courtesy of the awesome sound system!
