I'm an avid fan of the books and very often I'm left disappointed by literary adaptations. This, however, is an extraordinary adaptation. The book may seem to be easy to adapt since it's generally a murder mystery, but the story is so much more than that. I didn't expect the film to really delve into the purpose behind the book, but these themes are prevalent throughout the film. The directing is effective, the score is chilling and fitting, the acting is top notch with great casting (especially Rapace). There's a reason why the trilogy has sold 30+ million copies, why the movie has broken records across Europe, why the film did so well in the US in limited release, why literary critics consider the book one of the best in modern times, and why film critics who have read the book think this is an excellent adaptation---because it's all true.

Five stars for one of the best adaptations of a book I really liked into a film I really loved. The book was highly expositional and crammed with extraneous detail but nevertheless a thriller one had to keep reading. Niels Arden Oplev was able to take the essence of the book and distill it down to a succinct and marvelous film. The acting is superb. I really appreciate that they did not cast Mikael Blomkvist as the standard, beautiful actor. Noomi Rapace is excellent and plays this very difficult role so believably. Both Nyqvist and Noomi bring much more depth and nuance to the characters of Mikael and Lisbeth than the book could hope of delivering. And yes, things happen slightly differently in the movie than the book but this was necessary to make the plot tighter and more suspenseful. Arcel and Heisterberg (the screenwriters) do so well where others have failed and take a good book and make an even better movie. This is not Hollywood so the hard to watch scenes of rape and brutality are done with simple, stark, clarity.  And the best part is that the screenwriters have significantly reduced the expositional faults of the book and honor the actors' and the viewers' intelligence to figure things out themselves.

This is an incredible film! Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant storytelling. It's a morality tale for adults. View it and afterward go hug your children and treat them well. Rapace is an excellent actress!  I found this adaptation so entertaining that I was disappointed when it ended, even though it was almost 2 1/2 hours long. I could have sat watching the great acting and intense plot for hours more. Yes, there are a few disturbing scenes, but it is rated R, an the scenes help to define Lisbeth's character.

General Movie Night Information

RSVP Requested: Anyone wishing to attend a Movie Night must email or phone me to reserve a seat for the specified night they are coming.   There is limited seating for each viewing, so any unannounced arrivals may find themselves in a Standing-Room-Only situation.  Email me at troy@troyfrey.com or call me at 717-665-1249.

Arrival Time: Please Arrive at 7:00 pm so we have time to get all the snacks and drinks organized on the concession table,  and everyone has a chance to meet and greet, get their snacks and drinks ready for the show, and get settled into their seats.  The movie will start at 7:30, so please be present and ready to be seated well before that time.

Admission:  One Snack Item or jug of beverage for everyone to share.  I will be providing beer on tap, a jug of ice tea for those who don't drink beer, microwave popcorn, and the movie.  Some snack suggestions for everyone else to bring: Regular chips & dip, pretzels, Doritos, nuts, cheese curls, crackers, cheese cubes, veggies & dip, donuts, etc. or an additional jug of soda, lemonade, or other drink. All snacks and drinks will be set out on the Concession Table to share around, and any leftover items will be stored for use at the next event.  Be creative with your selections, but please bring something that most everyone will enjoy eating!

Feature Movie: Starts at 7:30 Sharp!  Movie shown is as listed in the Movie Schedule Above.

Be aware the movie is usually an action/adventure type of film and the sound system is very powerful.

Be prepared for very loud explosions, gunfire, crashes, and strong vibrating bass.

Intermission: Most of the movies shown in the Frey Theater are split onto 2 DVDs, so there is usually a 15 minute intermission in the middle of each movie.  Figure this extra time into the total length of the movie.

Second Feature: If anyone wishes to stay later, or cannot make the 7:30 movie, a Second Feature can easily be shown either night.  This can be the same or a different Movie, Concert Video, Comedy video, TV series DVD, etc. and will be at the choosing of those staying late.  The second feature would generally start around 9:30 - 10:00 pm, depending on length of first movie - everyone is welcome to stay late!

Late Arrivals: The big garage door at the front of the house will be unlocked during the movies.  Please come through the garage and let yourself in the basement door at the rear left.  Just follow the sounds of loud explosions - We will NOT hear you knocking, pounding, or screaming outside once the movie starts - courtesy of the awesome sound system!
